According to the Decree of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on ‘Changes to the Nominal Value of Monetary Units and the Scale of Prices (denomination)’ dated 7 February 2005 new generation currency (AZN) was issued into circulation from 2006 onward (1:5000). The denomination structure of new currency includes 7 denominations of banknotes (1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200) and 6 denominations of gapiks (1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 50). One manat is divided into 100 (hundred) gapiks.

A motif of single concept based new monetary units is ‘Independent Azerbaijan’, which features independence, growth and development of Azerbaijan across all areas and integration of Azerbaijan to Europe.

The security system of the national banknotes rests upon a common security philsophy.

The security system of the national currency consists of four levels of security (Levels I, II, III and IV). Each denomination has its own background color and same security features located in the same position.

• Level I security features are public features that can be checked without any special equipment.
• Level II features can be checked with simple equipment (magnifying glass and UV light) and are mainly intended for vendors.
• Level III features created using high tech processes allow banknote experts and special equipment to identify counterfeit.
• Level IV features can only be identified by the Central Bank of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The security system of coins incorporate a special security feature located at the side of coins, ultrafine elements, tactile surface, technical indicators set for the coin, including its diameter, weight and metal composition.
